After an hour or so of shopping for Midwinter gifts, Wulf decided to go practice in the outdoor knights's training courts, thinking that it'd at least get his blood pumping a bit and make him a little warmer.
Well, it looks like I'm not the only one that decided to practice today, thought Wulf, as he neared the training courts, which were located on the other side of the palace than the entrance hallway.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't Sir Wulfenstein of Sturmhammer Gorge. What brings you here?" asked a cold but familiar voice.
Bloody hell, thought Wulf. Aloud he said, "Sir Cadassi of Anesaak Keep. It's been awhile since were training at the palace together, hasn't it?" He clenched his fists.
"Yes indeed," said Cadassi aloud. "I've been quite busy with all the assignments Balthazar's put me on. Apparently there is quite a demand for knights with battle magic. What of yourself, Wulf? Had any odd encounters with bandits lately?" The other knights around Cadassi erupted into laughter.
I knew it. I knew that Cadassi, Glynwood, and that braindead fool Torrad had sent me on the stupid goose chase for a nonexistant bear. They were probably watching my every move. AAAAAAAAAAGHHHH!Wulf thought, frusterated.
"Well, Sir Wulf, I too need sword practice. A duel, perhaps?" Cadassi asked.
"My head's been hurting somewhat as of late," said Wulf. "I'd prefer not to."
"No, no, no. I insist," said Cadassi slyly. "Here, take this sword." He held out a practice sword to Wulf. Wulf inspected the sword. No lead? That's quite odd, Wulf thought.
"Very well," muttered Wulf, as he and Cadassi took up a fighting stance.
No sooner had they done that than Cadassi gave his sword a quick twirl and attempted a slash. Wulf parried and replied with his own quick thrust, which Cadassi nearly let hit him. "I see that you've improved somewhat since our last encounter," said Cadassi. "But exactly how much?" he asked, sending a slash at Wulf's legs. Wulf jumped just in time.
Wulf brought his sword up high for a chop, then twirled low for a slash, narrowly missing Cadassi's sword but striking him in the knees. The other knight struck again, and Wulf once again parried the blow. Wulf's next strike landed exactly where he'd meant it, in the chest.
"I do believe that I am winning now, Cadassi," said Wulf, pleased with himself. He turned again, but turned the wrong way, straight into the other sword. Wulf cursed, and attempted another slash. Cadassi jumped nimbly over it, and Wulf cursed as he barely managed to regain his balance. As Cadassi chopped again, Wulf blocked it, throwing his full body weight into it.
The two knights were now locked in body-to-body combat. Wulf pushed harder, and Cadassi looked ready to step back. The other knights, though, were still cheering for Cadassi. "Takoda-Sur," said Cadassi softly.
Wulf felt a piercing pain in his hands. He risked a quick glance down, and saw blood. Cadassi, taking advantage of the situation, whirled his blade away from the other one, brought it up under the cross, and flicked it backwards. Wulf's sword went flying from his hands. A moment later, Cadassi's sword was at Wulf's throat.
What did he DO? thought Wulf. How the hell did he CHEAT like that? The other knights erupted in cheers. "Very well," said Wulf. "You're still better than I am," he said, knowing full well that Cadassi had rigged the sword with something magic.
As Cadassi celebrated with the other knights, Wulf spit on his handkerchief and rubbbed some of the blood away from his hands. Looking closer at them, he saw three slits on each hands. Slits that could only be caused by knives or pieces of metal embedded deep into a sword and able to be called up by magic.
"Until next time," said Wulf, nodding at Cadassi. You bloody cheating little blighter,he thought.
Wulf then walked over to the supply room for knights, and attempted to bandage his hands with some nearby cloth. Unfortunately, as both his hands hurt to bend, this was no easy task. After about twenty minutes of struggling, Wulf gave up and simply pulled some gloves on as he walked away from the palace.
