Rosemary of Sturmhammer Gorge had been enjoying a quiet winter afternoon when she heard a yell from outside, followed by loud sobbing.
Alarmed, she got up and walked briskly in the direction of the noise, pausing to put on her winter cloak before she walked outside.
"WULF!" she yelled, as she saw her younger son in the snow, crying in pain. His left foot looked to have bled through his boot.
"Are you alright, Wulfie?" she asked quickly.
"NO!" sobbed Wulf. "It hurts, Mummy!"
Without further question, Rosemary picked up her six-year-old son and carried him up to his nurse, Kami, who also knew healing magic.
"Is he alright, Rosemary?" the nurse asked, alarmed at ths sight of the blood.
"No, he seems to have hurt his foot," his mother said.
Kami carefully pulled off the boot to reveal a large bruise and a fairly deep cut across the top of Wulf's foot. "I'll be right back," she said. "We're going to need to clean this up a bit."
How on Earth did he manage to cut his foot this deeply THROUGH his boot? thought Rosemary as she tried to calm her son.
"Sssh, it's okay, Wulfie. Kami's just going to go get a bandage and your foot will feel good in no time," she said. Wulf's crying slowed just as Kami came back with the bandages, some soap and water, and a poultice. Kami proceeded to clean and bandage Wulf's foot.
"There you go, Master Wulf," said Kami. "Your foot should feel better in no time," she said.
"Now, Wulfie, what exactly happened?" asked Rosemary, looking at her son.
"Well, Mum, I hadta defend the castle from the bad guys," said Wulf.
"Bad guys?" asked Rosemary, puzzled.
"I was playing," said Wulf.
"And how did you manage to do that to your foot if you were only playing?" asked Kami.
At that moment, an eight-year-old Finn burst into the room. "MUM! MUM! Wulf took Da's sword!"
Rosemary narrowed her eyes at her older son. "Finn, what have I told you about talking to me calmly?"
"Sorry, Mum, but it was very important. I found Da's sword lying by Wulf's snowman!" said Finn.
"Thank you, Finn," said Rosemary. "You may leave now."
Finn obeyed his mother and left the room. Rosemary turned to her other son. "Wulf, why was the sword there?" she asked. "You know you're not supposed to touch it."
"Well, Mum, I needed something to kill the bad guys with," said Wulf matter-of-factly.
"And the bad guy was a snowman?" Kami asked, amused.
"Yep. The trees don't break right and you can chop the heads off snowmen," stated Wulf.
"Why were you using your da's sword instead of your play sword?" asked Rosemary.
"I dunno where mine went," said Wulf. "And that sword's really HEAVY! I dropped it on my foot when I tried to kill the bad guy."
"So that's how you hurt yourself?" asked Kami.
"Yes," said Wulf, staring at the floor. "Sorry, Mum. You're gonna punish me now, right?"
"Well, Wulf, I probably should," said Rosemary. "But right now, I'm just glad you're ok," she said, giving Wulf a hug. "But let's not use Da's sword again, okay?" she said, smiling.
"Mum, I think I wanna be a knight," Wulf announced. "I wanna kill bad guys for real!"
"Well, let's not kill any more bad guys until then," said Rosemary, laughing.
((I'm just grinning like mad now...))
